What to expect from a microneedling appointment

You might be considering booking a microneedling appointment or perhaps you’ve just been curious about the treatment - and rightfully so, as it is quickly becoming one of the most popular non-invasive skin treatments for maintaining a youthful appearance (among many other benefits!).

Here at DermaEnvy Skincare, we specialize in non-invasive medical aesthetic treatments and microneedling is one of our favourite skincare treatments to perform. “The results that our clients often see with microneedling are quite impressive when you consider the process, the recovery time and the cost.” says Marketing Director Alicia Apesteguy.

The process begins with skin numbing in the form of a topical lidocaine cream. Once the skin is numbed, a trained medical aesthetician will then begin the microneedling process. The device has 12-16 microneedles that quickly puncture the skin in an up-and-down motion - this prevents any risk of the needles dragging and potentially harming the skin. These micro-channels allow product to penetrate deeper so pairing the treatment with something like a Hyaluronic Acid (we use a Hyaluronic Acid and Peptide Serum by SkinHealthMD) works efficiently to not only hydrate the skin but to soothe any inflammation.

Here’s where microneedling really shows it’s benefits - The skin reacts to the micro punctures by starting a wound healing cascade. Stem cells in the lowest epidermal layer are stimulated to proliferate. New cell formations are formed and the skin becomes thicker. New anchor collagens re-connect the epidermis and dermis. The production of hyaluronic acid is increased and fine wrinkles are smoothed. The supply of oxygen is improved and the skin is rejuvenated. Essentially, your skin boosts the amount of collagen being produced in an effort to recover and heal the “wound” and results in more plump, smooth, and tight skin.

Our most commonly treated area is the face however microneedling has gained popularity for a variety of other body areas and uses. Great results can be achieved for things like scarring, stretch marks, loose skin, hair loss and more.

After your treatment, your skin expert will discuss homecare with you. This generally entails avoiding any heat/sweating for 42 hours. The area that was treated will generally feel sensitive, dry and inflamed for 24-42 hours afterwards. Taking aspirin can alleviate any mild pain and/or swelling. Applying a product such as hyaluronic acid for hydration works well - pay close attention to using products with no fragrance or active ingredients. Avoid any harsh skincare for 2-4 days and do not exfoliate. And of course, ensure that you are using SPF and limiting sun exposure while your skin heals.

Another great tip is to support your skin while it is producing elevated amounts of collagen by taking a collagen supplement such as Bend Beauty Marine Collagen.

Most clients will begin to notice some initial results within 1 week of treatment however as with most skin treatments, full results become noticeable after about 3-4 weeks.
